Nashville Early Music Ensemble to Premier at the Parthenon

The newly formed Nashville Early Music Ensemble will give its premier performance at the Parthenon on Tuesday, October 2 at 7:00 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public.

The ensemble is designed to perform the vocal and instrumental music of the Medieval and Renaissance periods as well as traditional ethnic folk music from many world cultures. The twenty-member ensemble features musicians with diverse music backgrounds but all with experience in early music. The instruments featured in the concert will be viols, violin, rebec, lute, ud, guitars, psaltery, harp, recorders, and a wide variety of percussion. The director is Dr. Gerald Moore, a retired music professor from Lipscomb University, who taught music theory and directed the Lipscomb Early Music Consort for over twenty-five years.

The NEME will be presenting Music from the Age of Discovery with Nineteen selections from the 15th and 16th Centuries. Featured in the concert will be courtly music of Italy and Spain, and popular songs of the Sephardic Jews, the Moors, and cultures from the New World.

The concert opens with an Italian piece "Ayo visto lo mappamundi" which describes the map of the known world in the late 15th Century. "Una sañosa porfia" expresses the laments of the Moors as they experience their defeat militarily to the forces of the Spanish monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella. "Cuando el rey Nimrod" is a Sephardic folk song which commemorates the birth of Father Abraham. The concert ends with "Oy comamos y bebamos," a lively Spanish piece expressing the joy which comes with singing, drinking, and feasting. It ends with the line, 'We fill our bellies and cram full the skin.'

The concert is free and open to the public.
